Week of January 5th

Dear Parent/s,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing break. It was nice to recharge and I wish you all health and happiness in the new year! I would like to thank each of you for being so generous this Christmas. I appreciated each and every gift, card and treat!

This week we will be getting back into our normal school routine. It is important for the kids to get back on their normal homework and sleep schedule. Please be mindful of this in the next week or two. The only test this week will be on Chapter 8 in Religion.

In the second half of school it is my goal to have the students become more independent. In the next month or two they should be able to read the directions and begin working independently, they should be memorizing their math facts (without using fingers or number lines), and they should be able to read our weekly story and other first grade level books out loud with fluency and accuracy. We will also begin having spelling tests (starting next week). With your help and reinforcement at home I know that each student will accomplish these goals. Please let me know if you have any concerns or if your child is struggling with anything.

I am in need of Mystery Readers for the month of January on Thursdays from 2:00-2:30. Please email if you can volunteer on the 8th, 15th, 22nd or 29th.

Have a great week!

Miss Tosti

We completed Chapter 8 before we left for break, but we will review this week and have a test on Friday. A study guide will be sent home.

Reading
Story: A Musical Day

Phonics Skill: short o and blends with -l
Grammar Skill: types of sentences: statements

Math
We will be reviewing subtraction on a number line this week and we will finish making most of our subtraction flashcards. Students will be expected to start memorizing their facts (addition and subtraction). We will continue to do timed math, however the amount of time to complete the 60 problems will go down. Please make sure your child is studying their facts each night. There are a ton of apps and websites that they can used to practice!
Timed math worksheets can be found at the website below. All you need to do is select all of the numbers next to "Adding," click "Create Worksheet" at the bottom of the page and print! http://www.worksheetworks.com/math/basic-operations/addition-up-to-15.html
