Week of 12/16

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed the Christmas Concert last week. The kids sounded and looked great! Before we get to the happenings of this week I would like to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year! I hope you take some time to relax and enjoy all of the blessings in your life. Please know that all of us here at SKS are so thankful for you and for your support.

The last week before Christmas break will be FULL of Christmas fun! Here is what we will be doing:

- No homework this week except to study for tests! Merry Christmas!

- There will be a short quiz on Fact Families on Tuesday. The kids really have a great grasp on this and we will review it today and tomorrow before the quiz.

- There will be a spelling and reading test on Thursday.

- Field trip permission forms and money are due tomorrow! Thank you! Congrats to Mrs. Sharkey, Mrs. DiMarino, Mrs. Walkenhorst and Mrs. Longstreth who will be our chaperones on the trip!

- Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday. Please sign the envelope and return it. You may keep the report card. Thanks!

- Test folders will be sent home tomorrow. Please sign and return.

- We will be doing different Christmas STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) activities all week. We will learn about how snowflakes are formed and how igloos are made (and make our own) and do an experiment with candy canes! The kids will definitely be putting their imaginations to good use!

- Friday is our bowling trip with our 8th grade buddies! Please make sure your child has a morning snack or money for a pretzel that they can take to eat at the alley. Pizza will be provided for lunch when we get back from bowling. Please refrain form sending in gifts for buddies. We made them Christmas cards :)

- Friday is a dress down day. Please send in $1.00 to dress down. If your child doesn't dress down they can wear their gym uniform to school since we will be going on our field trip. Pajamas are also allowed on this day :).

- School resumes on Thursday, January 2nd!

Have wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Week of 12/9

Dear Parents,

Happy second week of Advent! The kids are certainly excited for Christmas and we have been talking a lot about the true meaning of Christmas and how it is not about giving or receiving "things." We talked about how we can give love and kindness as gifts to honor the baby Jesus too. The Christmas Concert will certainly get you in the Christmas spirit Wednesday night :). Here are your other reminders:

- The 2nd trimester starts today. Report Cards will be sent home on Tuesday next week.

- We will celebrate our Monthly Mass tomorrow at 9:00 am. All are welcome!

- The K-4 Christmas Concert will be Wednesday night at 7:00pm in the Church. Please have your child in the Church no later than 6:40 pm. They are to dress in their "Christmas Best." Please no jeans or sneakers. You can pick your child up after the concert in their pew. Please make sure I (or Miss Panaro) see you take your child :). Half of our class will sit on the right side and half will sit on the left.

- We will go to Santa's Secret Shop on Friday at 10:30 am. Information and envelopes were sent home today. It is helpful if you fill out the envelope with your child and write how much to spend on each person. You can return the envelope any day this week. You are welcome to come help your child shop!

- Our bowling field trip with our 8th grade buddies will be on Friday, December 20th at Sproul Lanes. Permission forms were sent home today. Please return them with the payment by next Tuesday. I will need 4 chaperones (no siblings please). Chaperones meet us at the alley at 9:30 am. We will be finished by 11:30 am. Let me know if you are interested and want to be in the drawing! You must have all clearances in and up to date. A pizza lunch will be provided when we return to school so there is no need to order hot lunch that day.

Stay warm!

Miss Tosti

That's all for now! Hope to see you Friday!

Week of 9/23

Dear Parents,

Can you believe this is our last week in September?! The kids did a great job taking their first tests last Friday. Before we took the tests I told them that the important thing is not that you get a 100 on every test. I explained to them that as along as they studied and tried their best that I will be proud of them no matter what they score!

We also started setting up our reading and math centers last week and will continue to practice them this week. Centers are a great way to reinforce skills, promote cooperative learning and are fun for the kids! Most importantly, they allow me to work with small groups. Check out some pictures below of the kids working in their center groups!

Here are your reminders for the week:

- The Star Student schedule for the year was sent home today. I will send home the a folder with directions the week prior to your child's week. Please let me know if you have any questions.

- We will have a Religion test on Chapter 1 on Wednesday.  A study guide will be sent home tonight for you to review with your child.

- Test folders will be sent home on Tuesday. Please sign each test and return on Wednesday.

- Your child's Think Central username and password will be sent home today as well. This provides access to our reader online as well as some other activities.

- Our field trip to Highland Orchards has been booked for Monday, October 28th! Permission forms will be sent home in the coming weeks! I will need 5 chaperones. If you are interested please send me an email and make sure you have all of your clearances.

Have a great week!

Miss Tosti

"Show Me the Number!" In this center, the kids picked cards and counted the number of dots. They then had to show that number using tally marks, digits, pictures and word form!

"Roll, Read, Write"

In this center, the kids rolled a dice, read the spelling word that went with the number and then wrote the word.

"120 Puzzles"
In this center the kids worked together to put 120s puzzles back together.

Week of 9/16

Our first Social Studies Class!

This year the first grade teachers decided to co-teach Social Studies to the entire first grade! It is a great way for the entire first grade to get to know the other teachers as well as their classmates! Last week was our first lesson on rules and laws and it went great!

Dear Parents,

We survived our first full week of first grade! I hope the kids enjoyed it and are settling into school and our routines. We are a work in progress but we had a great week! I hope that you are continuing to set routines at home and are giving your child more responsibility. The more we work on this the more independent they will become!

Be sure to check out the pictures from our "Book Club" that we had on Friday when we met our 8th grade buddies. The kids discussed their summer reading books and made a craft to go with it! It was a great time!

Here are your reminders for the week:

- Please have journals decorated and covered by this Friday.

- We will have our first school Mass on Wednesday at 9:00am. Please join us!

- We will have our first reading test on the story "Jack and the Wolf" this Friday. I will read all of the questions and answers for the first few tests. The reader will be sent home this week so you can read and review the story at home.

- Our first Spelling test will also be on Friday. We have been practicing a lot with short A words in school. Please review the words at home each night as well.

- Magic Words will also be tested on Friday so please make sure you are reviewing them each night.

I think that is it for this week! Please email me if you have any questions!

Miss Tosti
