Week of 10/15

Learning Addition

Last week we started our unit on addition. We learned that addition is adding two parts to make one whole. We also learned that the numbers we add are called addends and that the answer is called a sum. Our main focus last week was working on how to make 10. We used ten frames to help up learn all the ways to get a sum of 10. Then we practiced how to use those facts to help us add larger numbers. It can be a little confusing at first, but the kids did a great job at grasping this concept! Of course, letting them write on their desks was helpful! Ask your child one night this week to show you how it works! Next up will be make sums of 20!

Dear Parents,

Fall is finally here! I hope you enjoyed the weekend. There are a lot of reminders this week so please be sure to read them all. October is always a busy month!

- Field trip permission forms will be sent home today. Please sign and return them along with your payment. The chaperones were picked and the lucky winners are: Mrs. Pegg, Mrs. Starck, Mrs. Ciavarelli, and Mrs. Genesio. Thanks to all the people who volunteered.

- School pictures will be taken on Thursday.

- We will have a spelling and reading test on Friday.

- You can now schedule your conference on Option C. An email with directions was sent out last week. Please let me know if you have any questions. Conferences will be on Thursday, November 8th and Friday, November 9th. If you would like to sign up for an earlier time on Thursday please respond to the email that was sent out earlier. Thanks!

- Friday, October 19th is "Walk With the Principal." If you would like to send in a $1.00 donation for the organization, "For Pete's Sake" (an organization that helps families who have experienced cancer with a close family member) please send it on on Friday. Students are to wear their gym uniforms to school. Please note that the winter uniform for gym includes sweatpants. Students must wear sweatpants to school every Tuesday. They can wear shorts underneath and wear them in gym class if they want, but sweatpants must be worn for the rest of the day. Thanks for your cooperation.

- Wednesday, October 24th is Grandparents/Special Friends Day from 9:30-10:30 am.

- Saint reports are due tomorrow and the Saints Celebration will be on Friday, October 26th at 9:00 am. We will read our reports this week to learn about everyone's saint. Please start getting a simple costume together for the celebration.

- Please check your child's school supplies! Many of them need pencils and some other art supplies.

Have a great week!
Miss Tosti
